Regulations on the use of high GWP (Global Warming Potential) refrigeration gases are changing from 2020. To help you understand how this change affects you, we’ve put together this summary.
R404a, commonly used in commercial refrigeration has a high GWP and therefore will be banned in all new commercial refrigeration equipment placed on the EU market after 1st January 2020. This is because of its high Global Warming Potential.
Check the rating plate of your appliance to see if your existing equipment uses R404a. This is usually a sticker/plate fixed to the interior or the back of the unit. It should specify which gas is used. If you are unsure contact the supplier/manufacturer.
After the ban, you can still keep on using appliances that contain R404a. There will only be an issue if future servicing requires a top up of the R404a refrigerant. At this point, the options are to either:
1. Adapt the appliance with an alternative refrigerant, although this will not be possible on all appliances.
2. Invest in a new appliance which uses a compliant low GWP gas.
Be aware, when buying any new equipment that some sellers may be continuing to supply products which use R404a at discounted prices to sell through their residual stock. In 2019, Husky will manufacture all of its products using hydrocarbon refrigerants only which are compliant with the new regulations.
